Embedded carbon: the new battleground

This article is a useful summary of the issues currently arising in respect of embedded carbon in buildings.  In short:

  • Net zero aspirations affect both the design of new buildings and the materials used.
  • There are no specific current Government standards, but these are expected.
  • London planning requirements are leading the way and are being applied nationally.
  • A variety of targets are being set by different net-zero frameworks.
  • There are no clear measures for evaluating re-use vs redevelopment.
  • Funders and investors are also beginning to take note of the investment risks of high embedded carbon buildings.

On the issue of re-use vs redevelopment the current public inquiry into the redevelopment of the M&S flagship Marble Arch store will undoubtedly provide guidance on the approach that planners take.
