What does B Corp mean?
B Corp Certification is a demonstration that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company must:
- Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing a risk review.
- Make a legal commitment by changing our corporate governance structure to be accountable to all employees, not just partners.
- Exhibit transparency by allowing information about our performance to be measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.
An analogy that is commonly used is that B Corp Certification is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee. In short, B Corps are companies that undergo a rigorous certification process to improve their social and environmental performance. They don’t just say that they’re good businesses or socially responsible businesses, as so many other businesses do.
They’re committed to using business as a force for good – and they’re willing to have their practices be independently vetted by a third-party and to make their results transparent.
