Rob is a Partner in the Planning team at Maples Teesdale having nearly 20 years of experience in planning law.  Rob advises a range of clients on all aspects of planning, highways and compulsory purchase law.  He has also spent time as in-house counsel for a residential developer driving developments forward to provide much needed housing in London affording a unique insight being client side and seeing the totality of the development process.

Rob specialises in providing strategic advice for clients at any stage of the development process from initial outline strategies to advising on the robustness of applications, to navigating the myriad of challenges that the determination process brings. He also advises clients on amending schemes and the merits of appealing those which have met with refusal at first instance.

Advising lenders on financing of development, or refinancing portfolios is another area which he has been greatly involved in for many years. Rob focuses on providing specific advice for lenders on planning risk and requirements to inform relative risk exposure and provide options for negating such risk.

He has routinely for local planning authorities and developers with regards to large mixed-use, and residential led schemes both in and out of London.

Professional experience:

  • Advise on the purchase of the iconic Maida vale Studios in West London;
  • Acting for a housebuilder in the negotiation of their s106 Agreement for an 1,100 home scheme in Bedfordshire;
  • Acting for a local planning authority client for a multi-phase several hundred houses development in Herts and four further sites having between 10 and 100 homes;
  • Acting for another local planning authority with 20+ stalled agreements;
  • Major portfolio refinance of several deal doe large off-shire and on-shire banks;
  • Planning strategy advice for a planning breach / enforcement on a £45M property;
  • Defending an Asset of Community Value nomination for the Police;
  • Appearing at Committee to defend a client unreasonably asked to enter into a s106 Agreement preventing amalgamation of a Property;
  • Advising several institutions on Class O Office to residential conversions and enforcement of the 3 year time limit;
  • Advising Richmond College on a multi-party mixed use development.
